Packraft Foundations: an Expedition & Paddling Skills Course on the Dolores River
Course & Adventure Overview
Turn the blue lines on maps into trails and acquire the packrafting skills you need to embark on bigger and better adventures on your own! And do all this one of Colorado’s most stunning rivers. The scenery on the different sections of this river range widely from mountain forests to desert canyons. And the quality of the boating matches the scenery, with everything from wide and languorous Class I paddles to rowdy Class III+ and harder excitement. We will only paddle up to Class II on this course. You’ll very likely see bald eagles, otters, bears and other wildlife, and generally not so many human beings.Â
Join us for this fun 3-day Expedition Packrafting course, which  includes one day of skills training on the Animas River and two days on the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers. This course also includes a night at Scullbinder Ranch, where you’ll eat a delicious dinner of locally-grown foods on the porch overlooking Mesa Verde National Park and sleep in glamping tents. At the Ranch you’ll participate in a planning sessions to discuss the logistics for this trip, and you’ll look at online maps and do a gear shakedown (i.e. we help you leave stuff behind that you don’t need!). Dinner & lodging is included in the price.
We’ll also have at least one Zoom meeting prior to the course.Â
You don’t need any experience to do this course.
Price: $1275
A 50% deposit is required to secure your space. You’ll need to provide the remaining balance 30 days prior to your course. The remaining balance is due immediately if you are registering inside of the 30 day window.

What You Will Learn
We designed this course for adventurers looking to expand their backcountry skills by adding a boat to their repertoire. We teach the standard techniques from our Packraft Foundations–Paddling Skills courses, but we spend less time on drills. Instead we focus more on what it takes to accomplish a multi-day packraft adventure in the backcountry. This course is meant to introduce you to these skills, not to get you to master them. You’ll do more drills and hone these skills in our Level 2-4 courses.Â
